Principle

Alabaster (amorphous calcium sulfate) can be produced by burning calcium sulfate. Gypsum piaster can be produced by burning calcium sulphate which contains water of crystallisation In this experiment students investigate the production of gypsum plaster out of hydrous calcium sulphate (gypsum). Students realize that alabaster decompose when heated and forms also an aqueous liquid. This liquid is water, which is detected by the blue color(change) of addied copper sulphate.

Learning objectives

  • How to prepare alabaster
  • Properties of alabaster and gypsum

Benefits

  • Easy teaching and efficient learning by using interactive experimentation PHYWE-Software
  • Experiment is part of a complete solution set with experiments for all Inorganic Chemistry matched with international curriculum: all topics are covered
