Principle

The performance curve of a PEM fuel cell is not linear, but reaches a maximum performance at a certain current. When fuel cells are used in practice, it is important that they are operated with the current at which the fuel cell brings the most power.

Fuel cells are interconnected to form large stacks (fuel cell stacks) for more power. It is hereby a must that each individual fuel cell is optimally operated, so that the stack produces the highest possible power.

In this experiment, the current-voltage characteristic of a PEM fuel cell is recorded and examined to determine at which given current the highest performance can be drawn off.

Benefits

  • Experiment is part of a complete solution set with a total of 10 experiments for Renewable Energy fuel-cell technology
  • The power supply used is versatile and is particularly suitable for pupil tests for all ages
  • Doubled learning success: Electric circuit diagram on top, real components can be seen at the bottom

Tasks

When does a PEM fuel cell provide especially high power?
